Summer Book Club
Join us at Island Books for the summer edition of our quarterly Book Club Gatherings. Our book club is a space for women to come together, discuss books, share our love of reading, meet new friends and re-connect with old friends.
All of our reading selections will be available for purchase at Island Books with a 10% discount if you mention that you are part of The Gathering’s Book Club.
For our Summer meeting, we will be discussing the book Maybe Next Time by Cesca Major. This is a heartwarming and emotionally poignant time-loop novel about a stressed woman who must relive the same day over and over, keeping her family and work life from imploding as she attempts to change the course of her life.
Here are some questions to consider when you read the book:
Do you believe in fate? Do you think we can do anything to fight the inevitable?
Was there a particular character in this book you could relate to and why?
All the stats show that in the U.S., despite women making up 50% of the workforce, they still consistently take on the majority of unpaid work at home. Do you think we could do more to address this as a society?
Has the book made you reflect on any changes you’d like to make in your own life?
We encourage you to bring a copy of the book to the meeting, as well as any wine or snacks you would like to share with the group. We are so excited to have you join us!

Fitness & Fuel: Xformer full body workout + quinoa bowl workshop
After a summer of relaxed schedules and meals on the go we’re looking forward to adding a little more structure and creativity to our fitness and meal planning routine. We are thrilled to be partnering with Core Havn, for this reformer class combined with a quinoa bowl prep workshop.
We’ll begin the afternoon with an Xformer class taught by Cat DeHaven, owner of Core Havn on Mercer Island. Her reformer classes are low impact, but offer incredible results. Reformer classes offer efficient training for muscular strength, endurance, and mobility. By focusing on the center of your body you’ll not only get all the ab work you could want, but you will also increase balance, stability, power, and stamina. Whether you are a regular at Core Havn or a newbie, we’re confident you’ll leave the class excited to book your next visit.
Following our sweat session we’ll head to the back room where we’ll have a post-workout refreshment. While we sip on our refresher Kelsey Johnsen, a registered Dietician Nutritionist (and instructor at Core Havn) will lead us through a quinoa bowl demonstration and prep. We’ll learn to make quinoa bowls two ways, one savory and one sweet. Attendees will leave with recipe cards and two to-go bowls in hand to eat that day or pop in the fridge for later.

Salmon, scallops and crab oh my! We are thrilled to be partnering with Ashley Besecker and Joci Besecker of Premier Catch for this seafood spectacular. Our chef for the evening will be Lisa Odegard, a cookbook author, teaching chef, and menu consultant.

Throughout the evening Lisa will offer cooking tips and tricks while Joci and Ashley give us the low down on their women-owned company that sources premium, wild-caught seafood from Alaska and the Washington/ Oregon Coast.
